Biography

Dr. Hasitha Priyashantha is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. His research focuses on sustainable tropical livestock systems, dairy science, milk quality, animal-derived foods, climate-smart livestock production, and circular approaches in animal food value chains. His work integrates animal production, food quality, sustainability, and climate resilience to develop practical solutions for livestock systems in the Global South. Prior to joining the University of Ruhuna, Dr. Priyashantha worked in Sweden as a Milk Quality Expert at the Federation of Swedish Dairy Farmers (LRF) and served as the National Secretary of Sweden to the International Dairy Federation (IDF). Through these roles, he contributed to national and international initiatives related to milk quality, dairy sustainability, and knowledge transfer while working closely with farmers, industry stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers. Dr. Priyashantha has extensive experience in research, teaching, extension, and international collaboration, with a particular interest in sustainable dairy production, precision livestock systems, climate adaptation, food safety, and livestock value chain development. His current research aims to enhance the resilience, productivity, and sustainability of tropical livestock systems through interdisciplinary approaches that combine animal science, food systems, and circular bioeconomy principles. He obtained a First Class B.Sc. (Agricultural Technology and Management) from the University of Peradeniya together with research exchange at Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, Spain, followed by a double Erasmus Mundus Master’s degree in Animal-Derived Food Sciences jointly awarded by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Sweden, and the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He completed his PhD in Food Science at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Sweden. Dr. Priyashantha actively collaborates with national and international partners and is committed to advancing research, innovation, and capacity building in tropical and circular livestock production systems that contribute to sustainable agriculture, food security, and improved livelihoods.
