About the Faculty

The Faculty

The Faculty of Agriculture, one of the pioneering faculties of the University of Ruhuna, is situated at Mapalana, approximately 16 km from Matara and 2 km from Kamburupitiya along the Matara–Kamburupitiya road. Established with the aim of advancing agricultural education and research in Sri Lanka, the Faculty has grown into a leading centre for the agricultural sciences in the Southern province and beyond.

The Faculty campus covers approximately 50 hectares and includes several academic and administration buildings housing lecture theatres, well-equipped laboratories, a dedicated library, student residences, student recreational facilities, a canteen, and an auditorium, all supporting a vibrant academic and research environment.

The undergraduate programmes are 4-year degree programmes conducted entirely in the English medium. Postgraduate programmes (MPhil, PhD, and coursework-based Masters) are offered through the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Ruhuna.

Academic Divisions

The Faculty is organised into seven academic Departments and one support unit, each dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and outreach in its specialised field. Explore each department to learn more about its academic staff and programmes:

Agricultural Biology Advancing knowledge of plant biology and agricultural microbiology to support sustainable crop production. Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness Analysing markets, policies, and farm economics to strengthen agribusiness decision-making. Agricultural Engineering & Environmental Technology Applying engineering principles and environmental technologies to modernise farming and resource use. Animal Science Improving livestock production, animal nutrition, and sustainable animal-based enterprises. Crop Science Enhancing crop breeding, agronomy, and seed systems for resilient and productive farming. Food Science & Technology Ensuring food safety, quality, and innovation in processing and value addition. Soil Science Studying soil health, fertility, and management to underpin productive and sustainable agriculture. Faculty of Agriculture Centre for Information Technology Providing ICT services, digital learning platforms, and computing support across the Faculty.

Undergraduate Programmes

FAUR offers three four-year degree programmes conducted in the English medium, admitting 330 students annually. These programmes are highly rated in the latest UGC Programme Review and are designed to meet industry and national needs.

B.Sc. in Agricultural Resource Management & Technology — focuses on sustainable farming, soil and water conservation, and efficient resource use.
B.Sc. in Agribusiness Management — blends business and agriculture, equipping students with skills in marketing, financial management, and entrepreneurship.
B.Sc. in Green Technology — emphasises eco-friendly solutions such as renewable energy and waste management.

The Board of Study in Agriculture, established in 2011 alongside the Faculty of Graduate Studies, offers the following coursework-based Postgraduate programmes:

Research degrees (MPhil and PhD) are also available in all departments, both full-time and part-time.

The Faculty of Agriculture is located at Mapalana, Kamburupitiya, Sri Lanka 81100. It is situated approximately 16 km north of Matara along the Southern Expressway corridor, easily accessible by road.

Welcome to the Leading Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna (FAUR) — Sri Lanka's leading institution for agricultural education since 1978. With over four decades of excellence, FAUR is committed to advancing knowledge, innovation, and sustainable practices in agriculture.

Our distinguished faculty comprises 80 dedicated academics, 80% of whom hold PhDs from globally recognised universities, ensuring the highest standards of education and research.
