About the Faculty

The Faculty

The Faculty of Agriculture, one of the pioneering faculties of the University of Ruhuna, is situated at Mapalana, approximately 16 km from Matara and 2 km from Kamburupitiya along the Matara–Kamburupitiya road. Established with the aim of advancing agricultural education and research in Sri Lanka, the Faculty has grown into a leading centre for the agricultural sciences in the Southern province and beyond.

The Faculty campus covers approximately 50 hectares and includes several academic and administration buildings housing lecture theatres, well-equipped laboratories, a dedicated library, student residences, student recreational facilities, a canteen, and an auditorium, all supporting a vibrant academic and research environment.

The undergraduate programmes are 4-year degree programmes conducted entirely in the English medium. Postgraduate programmes (MPhil, PhD, and coursework-based Masters) are offered through the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Ruhuna.

Academic Divisions

The Faculty is organised into seven academic Departments and one support unit, each dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and outreach in its specialised field. Explore each department to learn more about its academic staff and programmes:

Undergraduate Programmes

FAUR offers three four-year degree programmes conducted in the English medium, admitting 330 students annually. These programmes are highly rated in the latest UGC Programme Review and are designed to meet industry and national needs.

  1. B.Sc. in Agricultural Resource Management & Technology — focuses on sustainable farming, soil and water conservation, and efficient resource use.
  2. B.Sc. in Agribusiness Management — blends business and agriculture, equipping students with skills in marketing, financial management, and entrepreneurship.
  3. B.Sc. in Green Technology — emphasises eco-friendly solutions such as renewable energy and waste management.

Postgraduate Programmes

The Board of Study in Agriculture, established in 2011 alongside the Faculty of Graduate Studies, offers the following coursework-based Postgraduate programmes:

  1. MSc / PG Diploma in Crop Production Technology (CPT)
  2. Master of Food Science and Technology (MFST) / PG Diploma in FST
  3. MSc in Animal Science
  4. Master of Agribusiness Management (MABM) / PG Diploma in ABM
  5. MSc in Agricultural Economics and Resource Management
  6. MSc in Agricultural Economics and Development
  7. MSc in Green Technology

Research degrees (MPhil and PhD) are also available in all departments, both full-time and part-time.

The Faculty of Agriculture is located at Mapalana, Kamburupitiya, Sri Lanka 81100. It is situated approximately 16 km north of Matara along the Southern Expressway corridor, easily accessible by road.
